Idaho Tansy Essential Oil

Idaho tansy essential oil
Idaho Tansy essential oil (Tanacetum vulgare) has a pungent aroma (to me it smells like a spicy licorice) that stimulates a positive attitude and a general feeling of well-being. It was not used much as an essential oil until Gary Young of Young Living Essential Oils discovered its powerful anti-viral, anti-infectious and antibacterial properties.

Idaho Tansy oil also has powerful chemical constituents that repell insects.  It is an excellent natural insect repellent. It can be used alone or mixed with any of these companion oils to use as a repellent: lemongrass, cypress, thyme, eucalyptus, basil, peppermint, wintergreen, citronella, tea tree, rosemary.

Dr. Len Horowitz and Dr. Sabina Devita recommend Idaho Tansy essential oil, along with other essential oils, for biological warfare preparedness

E. Joseph Montagna, in 'The Herbal Desk Reference' on herbal formulas, lists Idaho tansy is soothing to the skin.  It helps tone the entire system.

Traditionally, it is known as an antimicrobial oil and has been used for respiratory infections, stomach conditions, arthritis, irritable bowel syndrome, aneurysm, bruises, diarrhea, genital warts, freckles and gout.

Some women use Idaho Tansy to lighten "liver spots" on their face and hands as well as freckles.
Note:  Possible skin sensitivity with Idaho tansy essential oil. If pregnant or under a doctor's care, consult your physician. Use with caution if epileptic.

Teresa,

Great question!

Yes, Idaho Tansy can be used for flea control on dogs since it is known to repel ticks, fleas and flies. It's one of the most versatile oils for animals. It helps tissues regenerate, is anti-inflammatory and anesthetic and generally cleansing and purifying. It can be used for cuts, wounds, colic and bruised bones.

For small to medium dogs, apply only 3-4 drops per application. For large dogs, 5-7 drops, depending on size. You can rub the essential oil under the fur or apply it to the bottom of their paws for fast absorption. The oil can also be applied on your dog's gums, tongue or underneath the top lip. You can also sprinkle a few drops on the spine or flanks and massage it in.

Many essential oils repel fleas and other external parasites. Here are a few suggestions:

Some pet owners add 1-2 drops of Idaho Tansy or lemongrass essential oils to their pet's collar to eliminate fleas. While others diffuse regularly to keep fleas away.

Some pet kennel owners have found that the Animal Scents shampoo works best on fleas, getting rid of them instantly. They have found that it also helps their dogs avoid picking up fleas from other infested dogs.

Other pet owners use just a little Purification essential oil blend rubbed into their dog and cat's coats to keep them tick and flea free. Some people have found that diffusing Purification regularly keeps fleas away from their dogs and cats.

Here's what the Essential Oil Desk Reference suggests to repel/eliminate fleas and other parasites:

Single oils: Lemongrass, tea tree, eucalyptus (all types), citronella, and peppermint.

Blends: Rub Di-Tone on pads (bottom) of feet, or under tongue.

1-2 drops of lemongrass can be added to Animal Scents shampoo before shampooing the animal.

Wash blankets Wash blankets with oils added to the wash during the wash cycle. OR… Add 5-10 drops of oil to the rinse cycle.

Also, place 1-2 drops of lemongrass on collar to help eliminate fleas.

For internal parasites, daily rub Di-Tone on the pads (bottom) of the feet. Many people have reported that they have seen the parasites eliminated from the animal within days after starting this procedure.

I read that tansy oil can be effective in getting rid or freckles and sunspots. Just wondering if it really does work for this and how long it would take from them to fade? Are there any testimonials of people who have used tansy oil for this purpose?
Thank you!

One of the indications of Idaho Tansy, as listed in the Essential Oil Desk Reference, is that it may help freckles and possibly sunspots. I would guess that it would take a long time.

A friend of mine has used Idaho Tansy and oregano successfully to reduce skin spots, but I don't think she ever wrote anything down about it.

I had a liver spot on my check that was getting bigger and darker and alarmed me. I put several oils on it including Idaho Tansy for months, but that didn't seem to help. However, when I started to apply the oils to my liver, the spot faded quickly (within days), whereas it didn't budge before. It is almost gone now.

I have a testimonial from Del Harms from Australia about brown pigmentation on the chest, but it's not about Idaho Tansy:

"Using lemon, peppermint & eucalyptus oils for an upper respiratory chest infection for a 10 day period not only assisted with my virus but at the end of 10 days I found the brown pigmentation on my chest area had gone. All that was left was 8 freckles I couldn't believe it as the pigmentation had been there for 15 years. This has been a double cure!"
