How People Are Using Thieves
There are as many ways to use Thieves oil as there are people using it. Here are a few of their stories…
Gargling
“This one, as a mom, I am most fond of. Put a few drops (of Thieves) in water and gargle with it throughout the day. I also diffuse it as needed, and keep it running in my office a good bit of the time!”
– Dr. Julie Montgomeryin, Essential Lifestyle Magazine, Vol 5 No 1
On Toothbrush
“I always put one drop of Thieves® essential oil blend on my toothbrush after I brush. It enhances the power and flavor of my Thieves toothpaste, and gives my mouth a kick every time I brush”
– Jeanne Corrin, Young Living e-News, Jun 23, 2009
Musty Books
“We have been in transition for some years. Even though I carefully boxed up our books and important papers in plastic bags, carefully sealing all openings with packaging tape, I’ve noticed they are starting to take on a musty smell. As I sort through these books and papers, I again put them in a heavy-duty bag; but before sealing it with packaging tape, I put a cotton ball with Thieves® essential oil blend inside the box. So far it has eliminated that musty smell in every box!”
– Meg Vogl, Young Living e-News, Mar 9, 2010
Removing Gum and Sap
“My son left gum in his pants pocket and they got washed with all of his clothes. I remember someone using Thieves® for stains on laundry, so I thought why not give it a try? I sprayed the laundry down with Thieves blend diluted with water, let it sit for a few minutes, and then scraped the gum right off!”
– Cheryl Carlisle, Young Living e-News, Feb 2, 2010
“I found a chunk of gum stuck to our hall shag carpet. It had been there for several months, dried but thoroughly stuck to the fibers. I dabbed Thieves® Household Cleaner on a cotton ball, then rubbed it on the gum and let it sit for a minute. The gum literally just lifted off the carpet. You can rub your fingers across the treated spot. There is no way to tell there ever was any gum there!”
— Kristen Grunewald
“My daughter came home from school ready to cut off some of her hair because she had gotten sap in it. We rubbed in a couple drops of Thieves® essential oil blend, and then washed it off with shampoo. Voila, no more sap.”
— Sandy Portillo-Robins
Removing Sticky Label
“I recently tried Thieves® essential oil blend on a decorative glass mirror, after the stubborn sticky label would not come clean. Just a drop of the Thieves oil did the job!”
– Eileen Bush, Young Living e-News, Jun 13, 2008
Water Heater Smell
“When our water heater started to smell, instead of using bleach to clean it, we put ten drops of Thieves® and ten drops of Purification® essential oil blend into the flushed water heater. Not only was the smell gone, but every time we took a shower for weeks to come we smelled the wonderful aroma of Thieves and Purification in the water.”
– Jessica Drollette, Young Living e-News, Oct 5, 2009
Cleaning Dry Erase Board
“We have a dry erase board at work. The cleaner from the manufacturer is full of chemicals and smells very strong. I used a couple of drops of Thieves® essential oil blend on a tissue to clean. The marker came right off and the smell of Thieves was much more acceptable.”
– Deb Bowman, Young Living e-News, Jun 25, 2008
In Vacuum Cleaner
“Before I vacuum, I take out the HEPA filter and put a few drops of Thieves® essential oil blend, or whichever oil I’m in the mood for at that particular moment, then I pop the filter back in. The air flowing through the filter dispels the wonderful aroma throughout the room.”– Kelly G. Palazzi, Young Living e-News, Dec 7, 2007
Bad Smell In Carpet
“After some heavy rain, we got mold and mildew in our carpet, causing the room to smell horrible. I put a few drops of Thieves® oil in a spray bottle with water and sprayed the carpets and the air in the effected room. Almost instantly the smell dissipated and never returned.”
– Melissa Giaquinto, Young Living e-News, Sep 30 2005

– Fran Norton
Thieves® Spray
Fresh Bedding
“Every time I change the linens on my bed, I spray Thieves® Spray generously and evenly on the mattress and the pillows. I feel that this leaves the bedding fresh smelling and free of those tiny things we can’t see. Sometimes I will also give the sheets and pillows a quick spray when making the bed. This keeps my sleeping area fresh between changing. I just love the smell of Thieves Spray!”
— Pam Jones
Litter Box
“For years, I have used Thieves® Spray to clean and prep my pet’s litter box. I dilute and spray the box before laying down more litter. It keeps it clean and fresh for my pet and for me.”
– Dr. Vera Franco Dahm
Garbage Can Odors
“We have had a lot of trouble keeping the enclosed garbage can smelling clean. I have used everything, even bleach. I got my package of Thieves® and tried Thieves Spray in the garbage can and for the first time we have not had that foul odor when you open it anymore! It’s absolutely amazing stuff and I don’t have to spray it often either. That really amazed me!”
– DeAnna Haagenson
Thieves® Waterless Hand Purifier
Carry In Purse
“Thieves is so important! I use all the Thieves products and keep Thieves Waterless Hand Purifier in my purse. These are the products that I personally have around all the time — they just fit every need. Plus, I teach about non-toxic home and personal care products, so they are fun products to sell too.”
– Joan Apter, Essential Lifestyle Magazine, Vol 3 No 3
Thieves® Wipes
Sanitizing Kitty Litter Bin
“I use my Thieves® Wipes to wipe out my cat-litter bins when I change litter. Thieves Wipes keeps the bin sanitized, fresh, and clean—and our big Maine Coon kitty loves the fragrance, too!”
— Patti DeBruin
Thieves® Household Cleaner
Cleaning Shower and Kitchen Sink
“I dilute 1 tablespoon of Thieves® Household Cleanser in an 8-ounce spray bottle and use it to clean my shower after every use. I simply spray the mixture on all surfaces, and when it comes time to clean, any grime easily wipes away. The more I use it, the less grime that builds up, and my shower smells purified too!”– Rachel Newman, Young Living e-News, Nov 2, 2011
“I dislike the chemicals in the shower sprays available in most stores. But it’s Thieves Houshold Cleaner to the rescue! I now dilute Thieves cleaner (according to the glass cleaner recommendation) in a spray bottle and confidently saturate my wet shower with the solution without holding my breath and racing out of the bathroom after spraying. It really works!”
– Sally DiCesare, Essential Lifestyle Mag, Vol 3, No 4
I keep a bottle of diluted Thieves® Household Cleanser on hand in the kitchen and use it to clean my sink and countertops. It cleans better than anything else out there and does it safely and without artificial fragrances or ingredients! I use it on everything that needs cleaning in the kitchen, bathroom and whole house.

Laundry
“I make my own liquid laundry detergent in order to live toxin free. I add a half cup of Thieves® Household Cleaner to about 2 gallons of detergent — it makes all the difference in the world! My clothes don’t smell of musty mildew anymore; they have a nice, fresh, clean, aroma. The washing machine also smells fresh again.”
– Mark Berberich, Young Living e-News, Sep 7, 2011
“A family emergency took us five hours away for four days. A load of laundry was washing when we left, and forgotten about. On the way home I dreaded the mildew and smell that would be coming from the washer when I opened it. But thanks to Thieves®, there was no smell and no mildew!
Here’s my formula per load: Two capfuls of Thieves Household Cleaner and about the same amount of 35% food-grade hydrogen peroxide. If your water is harder, add a bit of baking soda.”
– Lois Y. Loyek, Young Living e-News, Jun 15, 2010
“I have two white blouses that I like very much. However, I was just about to throw them out. One had what looked like a spot of black tar on a sleeve, and the other had two small black spots in the front. They had been scrubbed, washed and dried in the hot dryer many times, and the spots seemed to be permanent.
However, just before I discarded them, I tried using the Thieves Household Cleaner as a test – to see if it would perhaps make a difference – but I wasn’t too hopeful.
Imagine my surprise when I found that, with a little Thieves Household Cleaner, and a little elbow grease, all three spots totally disappeared. Not only that, but the blouses appear refreshed and new looking. I am truly surprised and delighted!”
– Gail K.
“I’ve found that Thieves Household Cleaner is about the only thing that takes fragrances out of clothes without adding any fragrance of its own (as many products do that claim to remove fragrance do – they only mask it with another).”
What I do is mix a little bit of Thieves Household Cleaner into a bucket of warm water and soak the items overnight. It only takes a little – about 1/4 cup or so, depending on the size of your bucket and/or amount of clothes to soak. If you have a lot of clothes, just use fill your washer with water, add 1/2 to 3/4 cup Thieves Household Cleaner and soak them in that.
In the morning, I wash my clothes as usual and dry. Usually all the smell is gone. If I encounter an especially stubborn odor, I repeat the soaking. It works fantastically on cigarette smoke and perspiration odors and just about any odor.
I like the idea of adding 35% food-grade hydrogen peroxide to your wash. I am going to try that!

“My daughter’s stuffed animal was quite dirty, but I knew I couldn’t put it in the washer. I sprayed it with diluted Thieves® Household Cleaner and rubbed gently with a clean towel. The lamb’s fur became white again!”
– Heidi Mischke, Young Living e-News, Mar 16, 2010
Rug shampoo
“My daughter asked me not to use the chemical shampoo soap that comes with the rug shampooer. So yesterday I used two capfuls of Thieves® Household Cleaner in a gallon of water in the shampooer. It cleaned my carpet and my house smells of no chemicals and smells so good.”
– Helen Mitchell, Young Living e-News, Jul 3, 2008
I use Thieves® Household Cleaner as a rug shampoo whenever I shampoo my carpets, using the dilution ratios on the bottle. I LOVE how it gets my carpets fresh and clean without residues or any awful artificial fragrance (which lasts for weeks and makes me ill). It also gets stains out beautifully!

Taking crayons out of carpet
“Our grandchild was over to visit while I was gone. My husband let him play with crayons and our two Yorkie puppies got the crayons and chewed them up. My husband tried to get the tiny bits up with the steam mop and when I arrived home I saw black and red streaks in the carpet — the steam had melted the crayons into the carpet. I used the steam mop again, but used Thieves® Household Cleaner full strength on the carpet first. I just rubbed it in and then used the steam mop. To our amazement, all of it came out!”
– Diane Behrens, Essential Lifestyle Mag, Vol 4, No 1
Dish detergent
“I never use dish detergent in my dishwasher. I simply add white vinegar and about a capful of Thieves® Household Cleaner. It saves a lot of money by not using a dishwasher detergent and gets the dishes quite clean and germ free.”
– Veronica Frierdich, Young Living e-News Mar 23, 2011
Oven Cleaner
I used a commercial cleaner to clean the oven, but I had to leave the house for four hours before I could actually enjoy the home anymore. So I followed the directions on the (Thieves) bottle, I sprayed down the oven, and I was amazed at how easily the grime came off. Even more, nobody complained about the foul odors that were usually associated with this tough task.

Indelible ink
“I had a large dry-erase calender laying around for a few years with indelible ink written all over it. I wanted to re-use it, but nothing would get the ink off no matter how hard I scrubbed… until I tried Thieves Household Cleaner. I dabbed it on full strength, let it sit a few minutes and everything wiped off easily!
– Ruben James
Cleaning glass water bottles
“I tried in vain to get my narrow-necked glass water bottles clean. No brush was long enough to reach the bottom and even running them through the dishwasher did not clean them completely. So I put a drop of Thieves® Household Cleaner in one with a little hot water and a teaspoon of clean sand (dry rice also works), shook it up like crazy for a minute, and the bottle sparkled like new. I love Thieves products!”
– Zettelyss Amora, Young Living e-News, Jul 13, 2010
Jewelry cleaner
“Keep your jewelry sparkling! I use Thieves® Household cleaner, diluted, in a small jar. I put my diamond wedding ring into the solution for just a few minutes and it comes out sparkling clean! Use it on any gemstones or gold, but be careful with pearls or opals. The dilution ratio is about a fourth teaspoon cleaner to a half cup of water.”
– Terry Croad, Young Living e-News, Jun 15, 2009
Keeping shoes fresh
“I put two tablespoons of Thieves® Household Cleaner in a spray bottle with one cup of water and keep it by the side door where we keep our running shoes. A spray into the shoes once a week keeps them smelling fresh. It is truly amazing now when I walk by that door I cannot smell feet.”
– Fran Pacella, Young Living e-News, May 18, 2009
Makeup brushes
“I use Thieves® Household Cleaner, less than a capful, to clean my makeup brushes. It loosened the imbedded makeup beautifully and cleansed them at the same time.”
– Paula Nelson, Young Living e-News, Jan 12, 2010
Outdoor wood trim
“This weekend we used Thieves® Household Cleaner to wash all the wood trim on the outside of our home. We put water in a large sprayer bottle with 4–5 capfuls of the cleaner. Not only did the wood trim clean up beautifully, but it also looked like we had repainted all the trim. The best part was there were no dangerous fumes, the rags were clean and fragrant, and we tossed out the water knowing it would not harm the grass. Now we are not only clean, but green!”
– Sabine Barnett, Young Living e-News, Sep 5, 2008
Cleaning up smelly dog
“I have found a strange, yet very useful way to take advantage of Thieves® Household Cleaner. I keep a bottle of the very mild mixture (mixed for glass cleaning) around the house at all times for any surface cleanup. Then I tried this: I have a large dog who has a sloppy beard and chin. His face smells terrible after he eats or drinks. I simply spray some of the cleaner on a rag and give his chin a scrub and the odor is gone! Works like nothing I’ve ever found! He doesn’t mind it either!”
– Samantha Whitener, Young Living e-News, Mar 9, 2009
Keeping vegetable fresh and clean
“I love fresh fruit and vegetables, but I find they don’t last very long in the refrigerator before they wilt. My solution? I fill a pot with a splash of Thieves® Household Cleaner, add water, and soak them for cleaning. After I shake the water out of the fruit or veggies, I bag them, put in a paper towel sprayed with my Thieves cleaner dilution, and close the bag. My fruits and veggies brighten up in color and stay fresh much longer. They seem much happier too.”
– Mary Clowers-Davis, Young Living e-News, Oct 26, 2010
House Plants
“I have found that even my house plants can benefit from the natural benefits of Thieves® Household Cleaner. Every time I water my plants, I add a cap or two of Thieves cleaner to the plant water. They seem to be healthier and actually bloom better when I do this. I have also been able to nurse a plant back from almost dying by treating it with Thieves cleaner. Within less than two weeks my dying plant had four new blooms on it. Thank you, Thieves cleaner!”
