Why are Young Living oils and products so expensive?
Producing pure essential oils is very costly. Consider that it often requires several hundred or even thousands of pounds of raw plant material to produce a single pound of essential oil.
For example, it takes three tons of melissa to produce one pound of essential oil. Its extremely low yield explains why melissa essential oil sells for $9,000 to $15,000 a kilo.
In the case of rose essential oil, it takes 5,000 pounds of rose petals to produce one pound of rose oil. When you understand how much plant material it takes to produce an essential oil, it is easy to understand why these oils are so costly.
Bear in mind that the vast majority of essential oils are produced for the perfume industry. This industry is only interested in the oil's aromatic qualities, not it's therapeutic qualities. Using high pressure with high temperatures and adding chemical solvents in the distillation process to produce greater quantities of oil at a faster rate is the common practice of the perfume industry.
Many people can't tell the difference in the scent of an essential oil produced this way, but these oils lack true therapeutic properties and will not produce results. Many of the important chemical constituents necesssary to produce therapeutic results are either flashed off with the high heat or do not have enough time to be released from the plant material. Added artificial fragrances boost what was lost in the harsh distillation process or didn't have time to develop.
These practices are not acceptable for Young Living's essential oils. Gary Young pioneered a specialized process that uses extremely low pressure and low temperature to yield the most potent essential oils on the market today.
Once plants have been harvested and distilled, Young Living puts the resulting essential oils through strict quality assurance tests. Samples are sent to independent and in-house labs where they endure a battery of tests, ensuring that when you crack open the seal of a Young Living essential oil, you are recieving the highest standard in purity, potency and preparation.

What are "singles" vs "blends?"
"Singles" means there is only one essential oil in the bottle from one plant or flower.
"Blends" means there is more than one essential oil in the bottle from two or more plants or flowers.
Each blend is formulated to maximize the synergistic effect between various oil chemistries and harmonic frequencies. When chemistry and frequency coincide harmonically, noticeable and measurable physical, spiritual and emotional benefits can be attained.
What Does "Therapeutic-Grade" Mean? Is there is a significant difference between essential oils that simply smell good and those that are therapeutic-grade?
Most definitely!
The highest standard for essential oils is known as therapeutic-grade.
In order to achieve therapeutic-grade classification, each essential oil must achieve the designation naturally, without excess manipulation and refinement, and meet specific criteria in four key areas: Plants, Preparation, Purity, and Potency.
- Plants - Young Living products are produced from the right plants, grown in exceptional soil, and harvested at exactly the right time.
- Preparation - Honoring a strict commitment to respect and protect the time-honored methods of distillation, Young Living makes every effort to preserve “nature’s living energy” in a manner as close to its natural state as possible. Using pure mountain water free of additives, Young Living has a proprietary, stainless steel distillation process that uses low temperature and low pressure to better preserve plant properties, capture the pure essence of the plant, and preserve the quality of the oils.
- Purity - Achieved through the use of quality plants and meticulous preparation, and not through ultra-refinement, our finished product is 100% pure. Young Living essential oils are unadulterated, uncut, and free of chemicals, pesticides, and heavy metals.
- Potency - To guarantee our products exceed existing world standards and meet our own higher internal standards for potency, we analyze the finished oil’s phytochemical profile to ensure it delivers optimal amounts of every key plant compound.
Independent laboratory testing proves that Young Living essential oils meet and often exceed industry requirements. As stewards of nature's plant remedies, Young Living maintains higher internal standards, built upon the magnitude of our own rigorous Quality Assurance requirements.
